A beautiful arrangement to brighten your Thursday.
Manhattan
When it comes to New York City one could spend years taking in all the food, culture, sights, sounds, and goings on. It has been my experience when traveling to rely upon the advice of friends as well as guide books. Friends can tell you about the greatest pretzel or hot dog vendor, what time of day to go to a museum to avoid lines, what to walk around and not through, where to get a coffee or glass of wine if the weather turns (or even if it doesn’t), the best markets, and the neighborhoods you want to spend a day exploring.
While John is in Manhattan working on the Metropolitan Opera’s presentation of Wagner’s “Ring” cycle it seemed the best time to get his recommendations for where to spend time in one of the greatest cities on Earth.
John’s handpicked selection of how and where to spend time in New York City:
Rollerblading in Central Park – who could pass that up on a fall day?
Wandering around SoHo checking out the fashionable boutiques.
Lincoln Center for music and fashion week.
The Diamond District for jewels. This is where John works at a rented bench to complete his commission pieces and create new jewelry.
See a Broadway show -any and all! The quintessential Manhattan experience!
Any of the museums, especially if there is something unusual exhibiting – like the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Big Bambu exhibit.
Riding the subway is still the best sightseeing in all of Manhattan.
Eats:
Saigon Grill for the best cheap Vietnamese and they deliver- it is the first thing John orders when back in NYC.
5 Napkins Burgers: who can resist a giant chopped salad topped with a burger, especially when you are interrupted by Sean Hayes sitting next to, or in this joints case, in your lap.
ViceVersa – great Italian food and wonderful owners in Midtown, and of course all of the local watering holes up and down the west side.

At the Metropolitan Opera
John left his in-house jewelry studio here at Compositions for a few weeks to work on Wagner’s “Das Rheingold” at the Metropolitan Opera. A world renowned opera tenor he divides his time between Manhattan and Portland, Maine. While away he keeps in touch daily and today sent us these cool photos of him as the character “Mime” in the Met’s costume shop. Ironically, Mime is a goldsmith and he is the one who forges the magic Tarnhelm that makes his evil brother invisible (it is the story of the Lord of the Rings in a nutshell). After that he is staying on to do a project at the MET called “Senna”, a new commission by Michael Torke. He will be singing the role of Senna, who was a Brazilian race car driver killed in a race in 1994. We are excited for him, his stories and photos!
Lotus Pods
One day about a week ago after it had been raining and gray for most of the week (Maine weather) the sun came out and we decided to take a few pictures of some of the flowers in the shop. These Lotus Pods are a great choice if you are creating an Asian theme or just want something whimsical in your space.
Beautiful Pics
Closing up the shop, I mean office, or floral gallery…for the evening and wanted to send a few pics of some of the beautiful flowers and plants keeping us company today. Pouring rain outside, the kind that gets the bottom of your jeans (yes we are into “those” temps in Maine) soggy quickly. Inside music and flowers, oh and jewelry. Will have to post about the beautiful custom jewelry we have ….tomorrow or soon promise.
